Chapter 36

Regan followed Darcy to her car. “Do you feel like a hamburger? We could just go to my place and grill burgers?”

“Actually that sounds really good. To be totally honest, I didn’t feel like going out anywhere.” Darcy smiled. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her keys. “Want me to just follow you?”

Regan crinkled her forehead. “You know what? The parking is not so great downtown. Why don’t you just ride with me? I’ll bring you back here after we eat.”

“Sure. I don’t mind getting chauffeured around.” Darcy grabbed Regan’s hand. “Show me the way.”

Regan gave Darcy a devilish grin and squeezed her hand. “Oh honey, if you want me to show you the way, I am going to need more than just dinner with you.”

Darcy felt her heart catch. She breathed in deeply and murmured softly. “Good, I want more than just dinner with you.”

“Huh, what did you say/”

“Oh, nothing. I was just thinking out loud. It will be nice to have dinner for two. I eat by myself most night.”

“Oh yeah, where’s Riley? Certainly, he isn’t busy every night.” Regan could barely hide the sarcasm in her voice.

“He seems to be busy all the time now. He always has business meetings or dinner with clients. I don’t see him much these days. I think that should bother me more but it doesn’t.” Darcy said the last part more to herself than to Regan.

“Hmm, that’s interesting.” Regan unlocked the car and opened the passenger side for Darcy.

Darcy smiled, remembering the last time Regan had opened her car door for her. She met Regan’s intense gaze. “What’s interesting?”

Regan shrugged. “Nothing, it’s not my business anyway. But if I was engaged to you, you can bet that I would be living with you, have dinner with you, and sleep next to you every night. But enough about me. I’m starving, let’s get moving.” She squeezed Darcy’s hand and helped her into the passenger seat. Regan didn’t see the look of sadness that played on Darcy’s face.
